The Winter's Tale
New Swan Shakespeare Festival
The Gateway Commons at UCI
Directed by Beth Lopes
Working on this show was a dream, as this is one of my favorites by Shakespeare. The concept for this show was to take it back to a European 1910 - with Sicilia inspired by a Western aesthetic while Bohemia favored an Eastern one. The music, featuring piano and various strings, followed suit.
The show presented many challenges, such as supernatural moments and a genre shift in the middle of the play. To tackle the latter, I went all in and pulled classic cartoon stock effects to create a choreographed cue that the actors could rehearse with in the space. Shifts in time were also heavily featured, as it slowed down or altered whenever some characters delivered monologues.
