The Refugee Hotel
University of California - Irvine
The Robert Cohen Theatre
Directed by Juliette Carrillo | Composition by Andrew J. Tarr
This US premiere recounted the story of a group of Chilean refugees who fled to Vancouver after the coup in 1973. Loosely biographical, playwright Carmen Aguirre addresses the lingering effects of trauma, coping with displacement, and the strength to be found in one's community.
Although there were many moving parts, the main goal for the sound design was subtle realism broken up by scenes of darker abstract nightmares. The challenge in this piece was breathing life into the world without drawing focus - particularly with practicals (an oven, radio, record player, vending machine, etc.).
