The Importance of Being Earnest
University of California - Irvine
The Little Theatre
Directed by Shishir Kurup | Composition by Guo Ningru
In perhaps one of the most bizarre interpretations of Earnest that I've encountered, the team tried to straddle the line between the real, if not more presentational, world and the inner lives of the characters. Director Shishir Kurup referenced Jordan Peele's Get Out and its stylistic choices, creating private aside moments in the staging where actors would address the audience directly.
The concept of the sound design was inspired by Wilde's life as a gay man. The stuffy room tones of Algernon's city apartment during the first act give way to the more lively, expressive countryside where Jack can cast aside his facade and be himself. The echoing reverb and pure tones of the third act underline the clarity that Jack finds at the end of the play.
