The Merchant of Venice
New Swan Shakespeare Festival
The Gateway Commons at UCI
Directed by Eli Simon
Our take on one of the Bard's most interesting problem plays was all about opulence and the power of money. I worked with director Eli Simon early on to create a musical palette that would drive the play from scene to scene with the necessary drama, suspense, humor, and romance.
String sections take center stage here. Venetian themes are lush, charged, and raucous while Belmont's are cool, restrained, and delicate. Stylistically, I was inspired by Astor Piazzolla and other tango nuevo artists - many of their covers are featured on the soundtrack.
